Waukesha Finance Committee to Evaluate City’s Financial Management Plan | Waukesha County News

Waukesha Finance Committee to Review City Financial Plan and Residential Refuse Contract

Are you curious about how your city manages its finances? The Waukesha Finance Committee is set to review the City Financial Plan during its upcoming meeting, and the details are quite intriguing.

City staff have been hard at work for several months developing a plan to address financial challenges facing Waukesha. With state-imposed levy limits restricting property tax increases, the city has had to get creative in finding solutions to projected budget shortfalls. By focusing on initiatives such as optimizing expenses, increasing user fees, and making departmental changes, the city hopes to eliminate the structural budget deficit in the next couple of years.

The planning process involved collaboration with department heads to come up with viable proposals, which were then reviewed by a working group of key city officials. The initiatives are expected to not only decrease costs but also generate additional revenue for the city.

In addition to discussing the Financial Management Plan, the Finance Committee will also consider a contract for Residential Refuse and Recycling Collection and Disposal. The proposed contract with John’s Disposal is set to begin in March 2025 and includes city-incurred costs for collections, disposal of solid waste, and cart maintenance.

The service is projected to cost over $27 million over the duration of the contract, with funding coming from the operating budget. This contract is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness and efficiency of the city’s waste management system.
