Society of Defense Financial Management: Evolving to Meet the Needs of the Defense Financial Management Community
In a recent development, the American Society for Military Comptrollers has undergone a significant transformation and rebranding. The organization is now known as the Society of Defense Financial Management, or SDFM. This change reflects the evolving nature of the defense financial management community and the diverse range of professionals it serves.
The decision to rebrand stemmed from a deep reflection on the organization’s mission and the needs of its members. The previous name, ASMC, no longer resonated with the majority of professionals in the field, as they are not necessarily military personnel or comptrollers. The new name, SDFM, aims to be more inclusive and representative of the broader diversity within the defense financial management profession.
Over its 75-year history, the organization has continuously adapted to the changing landscape of financial management, embracing new technologies and expanding its membership to include a wide range of professionals. Today, SDFM members come from various backgrounds, including accountants, budget analysts, auditors, data analysts, system engineers, and data scientists.
The mission of SDFM is threefold: to promote education, training, and certification for defense financial managers; to drive financial transformation in the defense sector; and to uphold ethical and professional standards. By upskilling its members, fostering collaboration between government and commercial entities, and maintaining high ethical standards, SDFM aims to support the missions and capabilities of the military services and the Department of Defense.
Ultimately, the rebranding of SDFM reflects the organization’s commitment to staying relevant and responsive to the needs of its members and the defense financial management community as a whole. The evolution from ASMC to SDFM signifies a new chapter in the organization’s history, one that embraces diversity, innovation, and excellence in financial management.
