Millikin University President Announces Retirement Plans
Millikin University President Announces Retirement After Successful Tenure
In a bittersweet announcement, Dr. Jim Reynolds, the 16th President of Millikin University, has revealed his plans to retire effective June 30, 2025. Since assuming the role in July 2020, Dr. Reynolds has led the university through unprecedented challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and has made significant strides in revitalizing Millikin’s financial future.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, President Reynolds shared, “After spending time reflecting on my career in higher education and with input from my wife Sue, I realize that the next chapter of my life needs to shift towards more focus on our family. Millikin is a special place and will always hold a special place in our hearts. But there is a season for everything, and it’s time for me to be with my family as Sue and I celebrate the joy of being grandparents.”
During his tenure, Dr. Reynolds played a pivotal role in implementing initiatives such as the Millikin Tuition Promise and the Big Blue Pledge: Illinois Free Tuition Program, which have made higher education more accessible and affordable for students. His leadership during the pandemic ensured that Millikin prioritized student health and safety while maintaining a vibrant university community.
Under President Reynolds’ guidance, Millikin has also strengthened its academic partnerships, including a new articulation agreement with Richland Community College, aimed at improving the transfer process for students. Additionally, the university has invested in state-of-the-art facilities such as the Center for Theatre & Dance, the Health Sciences Center, and the forthcoming Rathje Athletic Center.
As Millikin approaches its 125th anniversary, President Reynolds leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to student success. The Board of Trustees is currently considering the next steps for the university and will communicate those in the coming weeks.
President Reynolds’ retirement marks the end of an era at Millikin University, but his impact on the institution and its students will be felt for years to come. We thank him and his wife, Sue, for their unwavering commitment and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
