Upscale LGBTQ+ Affinity Housing Options for Older Adults
Affinity housing for older LGBTQ+ adults is a growing trend in the housing market, offering a sense of community and belonging for those who may have faced discrimination or isolation in traditional housing settings. Developments like Living Out are providing upscale options for those who can afford it, while nonprofit organizations are also stepping up to provide affordable options for LGBTQ+ elders.
Living Out, with its luxurious amenities and celebrity chef-run restaurant, is setting a new standard for LGBTQ+ affinity housing. However, with rents ranging from $4,999 to $8,299 a month, it remains out of reach for many older adults in the community. On the other hand, affordable options like Triangle Square Apartments in Los Angeles and The Pryde in Boston are providing much-needed housing for LGBTQ+ elders with lower incomes.
The demand for LGBTQ+ friendly housing is evident, with The Pryde receiving over 700 applications for just 74 apartments. This highlights the need for more affordable and inclusive housing options for older adults in the LGBTQ+ community. With 31 LGBTQ-friendly affordable housing complexes already in operation or in development across the country, progress is being made to address this need.
As we celebrate Pride month and reflect on the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance, it is important to remember the challenges that older LGBTQ+ adults may face in finding safe and welcoming housing options. Affinity housing developments like Living Out and affordable options like The Pryde are paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ elders. It is crucial that we continue to advocate for affordable and inclusive housing options for all members of the LGBTQ+ community, regardless of income or background.
