Town seeks new perspective on financial situation

Town of Wareham to Undergo Financial Review by Division of Local Services

In the town of Wareham, big expenses are looming on the horizon, and the Finance Committee Chair, Norma Scoggin, believes that the town could benefit from a fresh perspective on its financial situation. The Division of Local Services, a state agency that provides support and oversight to municipal officials, will be conducting a thorough review of Wareham’s financial management over the next year.

This isn’t the first time Wareham has undergone a financial review from the Division of Local Services. The last review took place in 2010 and led to the implementation of new financial policies that ultimately improved the town’s financial standing. Scoggin acknowledges that Wareham is in a much better position now than it was in 2010, but the town still faces challenges in paying its bills and generating new revenue.

One of the major financial concerns for Wareham is the need for significant investments in projects to enhance the town’s sewer system. The Finance Committee has been discussing the idea of a financial review since April, and recently, the Select Board agreed to request one from the Division of Local Services.

Select Board Member Sarah Corbitt expressed support for the financial review, noting that while the current financial managers have done a commendable job, fresh eyes can offer valuable insights. The review process is expected to take between nine months to a year from the time of the request to its completion, according to Town Administrator Derek Sullivan.

Overall, the decision to undergo a financial review demonstrates Wareham’s commitment to ensuring sound financial management and planning for the future. By seeking outside expertise and recommendations, the town is taking proactive steps to address its financial challenges and position itself for long-term success. Stay tuned for updates on Wareham’s financial review and the potential impact it may have on the town’s financial health.
